The owner's family had been selling and making Kyoto sweets named "Otowaya" which his/her house was inside of Hongan-jin (temple) for over 360 years. This building was built in 1912 (Meiji era) and 1st floor was used for shop partially and 2nd floor was used for shop staff to live. Current owner was not allowed to enter 2nd floor's Tatami room as it was used for business meeting when he/she was child. After Kyoto sweets maker "Otowaya" decided to close the shop, the building was renovated to be Kuraya's Japanese townhouse on October 2015.
